In 2012 Diether has retired from his long employment with a large company, and lives with Jutta in Reno full-time since then. Both perform some professional consulting and academic work, which leads to occasional travel. Their son and his wife live and work in the Bay Area.
The house in Reno is comfortable, and very energy efficient because of the passive solar heating through south facing windows. The winters of 2004/2005, 2005/2006, and 2015/2016 brought a lot of snow with the opportunity to exercise to clear the short driveway.
The family cars are a Chevy Malibu, preferred for long distance trips because of it's good mileage (40mpg for freeway and country-road driving). For exploring remote areas of Nevada and nearby states, including un-paved roads, they use their 2017 Chevy Equinox with 4-wheel drive and sturdy tires (after an original tire failed on a forest service road north of Saint George UT.
