In 2012 Diether has retired from his long employment with a large company, and lives with Jutta in Reno full-time since then. Both are happy to be members of the Catholic University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), community and to volunteer based on their capabilities. They also like to travel by car in areas east of their home in Reno NV all the way to Montana or Wyoming. Their son and his wife live and work in the Bay Area.
The house in Reno is comfortable, and very energy efficient because of the passive solar heating through south facing windows. Winters provide some occasional opportunity to exercise by clearing from the short driveway.
The family cars are a Chevy Malibu, preferred for long distance trips because of it's good mileage (40mpg for freeway and country-road driving). For exploring remote areas of Nevada and nearby states, including un-paved roads, they use their 2017 Chevy Equinox with 4-wheel drive and sturdy tires (after an original tire failed on a forest service road north of Saint George UT.
